Zoolz Offers 100 GB Free Online Space For Its First Million Users

Zoolz, an online storage company, is offering 100 GB of free online lifetime storage for the first million users who sign up. Ordinarily, the monthly price for this amount of storage is $1.66 (approx Rs 91) for a single user, $10 (Rs 550) that gives 500 GB for 3 users, $20 (Rs 1100) for 1 TB (6 users), and $35 (Rs 1950) for 2 TB (10 users). The free 100 GB offer can be used by up to two users at a time. Interestingly, the website claims that there are no restrictions on the file size, type, or even upload/download speeds.

To avail this offer, sign up with www.zoolz.com using your email ID. Once your account has been activated, download and install the client software to your PC. Log into the account through this client software and set up the parameters. We found this to be more of a backup/restore service and there is no convenient drag-and-drop feature. Also, you cannot download files to this online storage directly from the web. The software lets you assign folders on your computer, including connected external drives and network drives to be backed up to the online storage.

BlackBerry Showcases Budget QWERTY Handset Q5

It’s been quite a busy week for techies around the world. Just a few hours ago, Nokia announced its Lumia 925. And before the dust settled, the Canadian manufacturer BlackBerry has unveiled its Q5. This smartphone features a QWERTY keyboard, which has been BB’s area of expertise. The Q5 not only flaunts a sporty design, but will also be available in youthful red, pink, black, and white shades. Similar to the Q10, this phone features a 3.1″ touchscreen with pixel dimensions of 720×720. However, the Q5 packs in a normal TFT LCD compared to Q10′s AMOLED display. It is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual core processor. Other features include a 5 megapixel camera, 8 GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, and 2100 mAh battery.

Nimbuzz plans to offer net telephony in India

If things go as planned for Nimbuzz, it will soon be on the road to offering net telephony in the country, according to a report in The Hindu Business Line. The popular instant messaging service provider is currently interested in acquiring the unified license. In his statement to Business Line, Vikas Saxena, CEO, Nimbuzz, said, “We are interested in unified licence. We have to see the details before taking a final decision. This is a core part of what are doing in other parts of the world already.”

The proposed unified license regime allows a company to provide Internet services upon payment of an entry fee of Rs 15 crore. The existing system, however, allows net telephony in the country only for PC-to-PC calls.

Interestingly, the company plans to go beyond instant messaging and cover areas like gaming and virtual goods, the report adds. Reportedly, Nimbuzz has launched Nimbuckz in partnership with other telcos. The service allows users to buy virtual goods such as avatars, emoticons, virtual gifts and chat-based games.

Patent reveals upcoming iPhones may have invisible buttons and sliders

Yet another innovative initiative by Apple is on the cards. The makers of the iPhone has filed a patent titled the “disappearing button or slider”. If the technology does make it to the market, it is possible that iPhones and iPads in the future may have buttons and slider controls that are not visible to the naked eye.

The patented document reveal that buttons in iPhone and other devices using this technology will remain hidden by default and will appear when required.

Google Pays Apple $1 Billion Per Year to be the Default Search Engine on Safari

Google reportedly pays Apple $1 billion per year to be the default search engine on Safari, according to Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter

We know that Apple TAC is accounted for in the Google.com TAC line item reported each quarter by Google. For 2011, Google reported ~$1.5bn in total Google.com TAC. For modelling purposes, we assume that Apple represented ~66% of this TAC (though we acknowledge that this could be high), or $1bn. At a 75% TAC rate, this means that Google generated ~$1.3bn in gross search revenue through default search placement on Apple devices. In other words, this $1.3bn of search revenue ($335m net search revenue) in 2011 is at risk if Apple moves away from Google. $335m represented ~1% of net Google.com search revenue. Notably, mobile/Apple revenue is among its fastest growing revenue drivers.
